The Huntsville Gem and Mineral Society (HGMS) was organized in 1958 by a small group of people who were interested in lapidary arts. The Society was officially incorporated in Alabama in 1965 as a non-profit 501(c)(7) educational organization for people interested in the Earth sciences and lapidary arts. In 1961, the organization had 15 members. Today, we are over 300 members strong!
Milestones
*In 2017, we celebrated our 50th Anniversary!
*In 2018, we celebrated our 50th Show!
*In 2019, we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Moon landing!
*At our 23rd July, 2019, member meeting, we enjoyed a beautifully decorated cake honoring the 1969 Moon landing.
*At our 8 – 10th October, 2021 Annual Fall Show, we displayed a genuine Moon rock hosted by our own Lowell Zoller. This was the first time we had a Moon rock at our Show!
September Birthstone: Sapphire- A variety of the mineral corundum, this gemstone occurs in blue, yellow, green, orange, pink, and purple depending on trace element content. This gemstone may even show a six-rayed star when cut as a cabochon. Source:
